Mechanism of Action

Nedocromil sodium is a non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory mast‑cell stabilizer. It inhibits degranulation of mast cells and blocks release of multiple allergic inflammatory mediators including histamine, leukotrienes and prostaglandin D₂. It also suppresses activation of eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages and monocytes. Indications

1. Inhalation formulation: Maintenance prophylaxis for mild‑to‑moderate persistent bronchial asthma, reduces frequency and severity of asthmatic episodes; prevention of exercise‑induced bronchoconstriction. Not effective for acute asthmatic attacks.
2. Ophthalmic formulation: For the symptomatic relief of ocular pruritus associated with allergic conjunctivitis (seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis).

Clinical note: It is preventive medicine; therapeutic effect requires regular continuous administration.
