Mechanism of Action Myostatin (GDF‑8) is a key negative regulator of skeletal‑muscle growth. Apitegromab selectively targets the inactive precursor forms pro‑myostatin and latent myostatin, blocking their proteolytic activation. It does not recognize mature active myostatin, Activin A, BMP‑9/10 or TGF‑β1, offering high target selectivity. By suppressing myostatin maturation, it reduces myostatin‑mediated muscle atrophy and supports muscle mass and strength gain.
Research Indications
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA Type 2 / Type 3): for non‑ambulatory patients receiving background SMN‑targeted therapy (nusinersen / risdiplam) to improve motor function.
- Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD).
- Exploratory: preservation of lean body mass under GLP‑1‑induced weight loss.
