Levalbuterol hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of levalbuterol, the pharmacologically active (R)‑enantiomer of racemic albuterol. It is a white‑to‑off‑white crystalline powder, freely soluble in water. It acts as a relatively selective short‑acting β₂‑adrenergic receptor agonist. Binding to β₂‑receptors on airway smooth‑muscle cells activates adenylate cyclase and elevates intracellular cyclic‑AMP levels. This triggers protein kinase‑A activation, reduces intracellular calcium concentration and induces relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle throughout the trachea and bronchioles. It also inhibits mast‑cell degranulation in the respiratory tract, reducing release of bronchoconstrictive inflammatory mediators. The finished pharmaceutical product is a sterile, preservative‑free nebulizer inhalation solution. Onset of bronchodilation occurs within 10‑15 minutes after inhalation; therapeutic effect lasts for 4‑6 hours. Compared with racemic albuterol, levalbuterol eliminates the S‑enantiomer component which may contribute to some adverse effects. It is used as a rescue bronchodilator for acute asthma symptoms. The API is intended for manufacturing inhalation‑grade finished dosage forms. It is not designed for direct human administration.

⚠️ Safety brief note

Potential adverse effects include tachycardia, palpitations, tremor, nervousness, headache and throat irritation. Beta‑agonists may produce paradoxical bronchospasm.
